Ant farm progress

We’ve got ants in our ant farm now. It’s just a matter of time before there are many, many more.

Many thanks to volunteer Shawn Britt for his hard work helping us put it together and in getting live specimens in our nature center.

Yard sale coming up

Join us at Ouabache Trails on May 19 for the Knox County Online yard sale. The Facebook group is holding a yard sale at the Lower Loop (main recreation area) at the park on Saturday, May 19, starting at 9 a.m. Vendors can set up for free, just bring your own tables & set up towards the middle of the recreation area so shoppers can get from booth to booth easier. At the moment there are well over 50 vendors coming! No advance notice is necessary, if you want to put up a booth, just come out to the park and be a part of it. We hope to see you there!

We still need one aquarium!

Attention all lovers of the county parks: We still need one 10-gallon aquarium for our addition of live specimens to the nature center at Ouabache Trails. If anyone has one they’d like to donate, we would be grateful.

Our plan to include live specimens will provide additional educational opportunities to visitors of the nature center and is something that we have not featured at the park for a long time. We plan on showcasing several species of native insects, reptiles and fish to help foster an understanding of the ecology around us at the park. Help us with our goal of education by making a donation to our project. Thank you.

Pyramid Mound cleanup

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Pyramid Mound, now is the time. We’ve cleaned up the area and repaired the road on the property. We will keep the gate closed to keep out unwanted motorized vehicles but foot traffic is welcome.

There is a walking trail that leads up the mound, which is believed to be a Native American archaeological site. There’s no entrance fee, but as the sign says, take only photos, leave only footprints.

Pyramid Mound is located on Ramsey Road between Main and Willow streets.

Ghost investigation footage posted

We’ve received some video from the Knox County Spiders, the paranormal investigation group that stayed in our Cabin #3 to see if there was any truth to the stories of ghostly activity that’s been reported by visitors in the past. Check it out here.

The Ghost in the Cabin

In early March a group of paranormal explorers ventured into Cabin 3 at Ouabache Trails park and spent a night there in an attempt to explain some of the stories related to parks staff by previous cabin visitors about strange, unearthly happenings.

The Knox County Spiders group brought in several cameras and digital sound recorders in an attempt to capture something like what had been described by previous guests.

Guests have reported several variations on a ghostly theme, including seeing a man hanging from the ceiling fan, hearing inexplicable footsteps going up the stairs, children’s voices and an eery knocking at the front door when no one was there.

Friday afternoon, members of the Spiders are coming into the parks office to share with us the video footage and sound recordings they took, which we will post to the website.

As more stories of ghostly happenings come to us from future guests, we will be compiling them on the site as well.

Sobhani Named Park Superintendent

Rama Sobhani has joined the Knox County Parks & Recreation Department as Park Superintendent. Sobhani received his M.A. in Journalism from Indiana University in 2008 and has a Bachelor’s degree from California State University Northridge. Prior to joining the park, he worked as a reporter for the Vincennes Sun-Commercial.

“On behalf of the Board of the Knox County Parks & Recreation Department, we welcome Rama and look forward to working with him. We feel he will be a great asset to us as we continue to make improvements to our parks and offer more activities for the community to enjoy,” said Cindy Malone, Board President.

Sobhani has volunteered at Ouabache Trails Park, helping design and build the first mountain bike trail and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Indiana Park and Recreation Association.

“It is quite an honor to have been chosen to lead the county parks and recreation department and I very much look forward to making and keeping the parks places where opportunities for outdoor recreation are always growing and changing to serve the interests of the community that supports them,” Sobhani said.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt
